Junior Boys – Intellectualism, Intuitive, Indulgent
The Junior Boys (Ontario, Canada) are made up of Jeremy Greenspan (Vocals) and Johnny Dark. Making music since 1999, this band has produced sounds that make you want to dance, cry, and sit and contemplate life while staring up at the sky… Err well, that’s what I do.
Their latest album, “It’s All True” was released this June, and is packed full of great new sounds, as well as beats and vocals that we have come to love of the Junior Boys. With this new album, there is a new vibe of intellectualism that has been embedded into their sound. They still retain their light heartedness from some of their previous songs like “Bits & Pieces” and “Hazel” off of “Begone Dull Care”, but pull in a richer sound that is more diverse, deep, and intuitive to those who enjoy a beat. Though these sounds sound easy on the ear, they are packed full of rich lyrics and with the emotion backed behind Greenspan’s vocals.
“It’s All True” provides a sense of nostalgia, conjuring up memories of childhood, the 80s, and moments from life that contain strong morals and themes within their undertones. The album’s feeling runs from each song, as Greenspan and Dark work off of each other, transitioning and building off vocals and beats, making each track feel natural and “right” to your ears. There is an understanding to each song that I really enjoy, listening to each song’s vibe creates a relation I can indulge in.
Favorite tracks on the album would be “Banana Ripple”, “A Truly Happy Ending”, and “Playtime”. Each represents a different sound that is true to Junior Boys and why I love them. We leave you with a fan-made video this not to pass up for “Banana Ripple”, but check out more about Junior Boys at www.JuniorBoys.net.
