John Clang

John Clang is actually Ang Choon Leng ( 汪春龙).

By the age of 21 he is exhibiting photographs at art galleries in Singapore. Clang first exhibited his work as a member of the controversial (and now defunct) Singapore art group 5th Passage Artists. His work has been shown at Proud Galleries, London; Bank Art Gallery, Los Angeles; and Galerie Colette, Paris. “Backs by Clang”, the photographer’s first solo exhibition was held in 2001 at the Diane von Furstenberg studio in New York. Clang’s advertising clients include Hermès, Nike, Godiva, Timberland, Reebok, Evian, Motorola, and Nissan. His editorial work has been featured in Nylon, Interview, Surface, 032c, The New York Times, and 2wice. He also serves as the Photographic Director of the experimental design and image magazine WERK.

The current occasion to tell you about his work is (Con)Fron – an exhibition at 2902 Gallery, Singapore. Like glimpses into a visual diary, it is an attempt to tackle both the conscious and the unconscious. These visual dialogues pin down the artist response to his environment and adaption in NYC and his relentless search for a sense of place and identity. Provocative and disquieting, minimal yet profound, the exhibition examines the deconstruction of memory and time, the human desire to project towards the future, but what comes out of the future is the past.
